Scoliosis is defined as a medical condition in which a person’s spine is curved from side to side. Although it is a complex three-dimensional deformity, on an x-ray, viewed from the rear, the spine of an individual with scoliosis may look more like an “S” or a “C” than a straight line. It is typically classified as either congenital (caused by vertebral anomalies present at birth), idiopathic (cause unknown, sub-classified as infantile, juvenile, adolescent, or adult according to when onset occurred) or neuromuscular (having developed as a secondary symptom of another condition, such as spina bifida, cerebral palsy, spinal muscular atrophy or physical trauma). This condition affects approximately 20 million people in the United States. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idiopathic_scoliosis
While the ideologies (causes), treatments and prognosis vary case to case there are some common sense things to keep in mind if you or your child suffers with scoliosis. The alignment of the spine and correction of nerve pressure along the spine is done on a daily basis in Chiropractors offices across the country. It is incredibly safe and effective — so consider Chiropractic first for yourself and your children before considering the more radical and risky medical and surgical approaches. Here are some supporting articles to help you better understand the proven approach to Scoliosis you can only find in a Chiroprator’s office.

Once you have made your decision to try a chiropractor for your scoliosis please keep in mind that not all Chiropractor treat scoliosis and not all techniques work equally well on scoliosis. My recommendations as a DC of 26 years and a patient who grew up with scoliosis before I learned the benefits of Chiropractic. Look for a Chiropractor who does Pettibon or Chiropractic Biophysics. Don’t delay another day, get informed and get to your local Chiropractor who uses Pettibon or Chiropractic Biophysics on his patients. Give you or your child the best chance at a normal healthy life. Wikipedia defines an allergy as a disorder of the immune system which is a form of hypersensitivity. Allergic reactions occur to normally harmless environmental substances known as allergens; these reactions are acquired, predictable, and rapid. Strictly, allergy is one of four forms of hypersensitivity and is called type I (or immediate) hypersensitivity. It is characterized by excessive activation of certain white blood cells called mast cells and basophils by a type of antibody known as IgE, resulting in an extreme inflammatory response.
Sounds complicated. Lets make it simpler, the immune system is run and monitored by the master control system- (your brain and nervous system). In fact all body organs and system are run and monitored by the brain and nervous system. Chiropractors adjust the spine and improve nerve function. That’s why Chiropractic works on so many different problem, it optimizes the system that optimizes you! Go to http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/mistakes/common.htm and read for your self. “Various studies have been performed about medical errors. A phone survey by the National Patient Safety Foundation found that 42% of people believed they had experienced a medical error personally or to a relative or friend. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) reports on two studies estimating the hospital deaths due to medical errors at 44,000 to 98,000 annually, which would place medical errors in the top ten causes of death in the USA. Barbara Starfield’s article in JAMA places the estimates even higher, citing a total of 225,000 deaths due to iatrogenic causes, which would place health-caused deaths as the 3rd leading cause of death in the USA. Holland et al (1997) estimates as many as 1 million patients are injured while in the hospital and approximately 180,000 die as a result, with the majority due to medication adverse reactions.”
Here is the kicker. Did you read it carefully? Take notice that JAMA the Journal of the American Medical Association was reporting they were the # 3 cause of death in America in 1997. Has it gotten better since then? No, absolutely not. The current death rates due to practice of medicine are in excess of 2.5 million a year. Going to medical practitioners is now the # 1 cause of death in the USA. Is your hair curling yet?
Need more? Check out this site for a more current and much more detailed break down of this issue at http://www.chiro.org/LINKS/Iatrogenic_Page.shtml.
Is there a better way? Absolutely!
On the same web site please check out all the common conditions, which respond very well to Chiropractic at http://www.chiro.org/research/ABSTRACTS/Conditions.shtml. There is no need to take the terrible risks inherent in the current medical system. According to Wikipedia the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics or JMPT http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journal_of_Manipulative_and_Physiological_Therapeutics is “the official scientific journal of the American Chiropractic Association and is the only chiropractic journal included in Index Medicus. Published by Mosby (Elsevier Health Sciences), the journal includes peer-reviewed original articles, case reports, journal abstracts, commentary, and new media reviews. The editorial board includes clinical low-back and spine researchers from medicine, osteopathy, chiropractic, and post-secondary education.”
JMPT addressed the question of Chiropractic and asthma in children. If you are a parent this is where the rubber meets the road. Please review the full atricle and explore all the links at http://www.chiro.org/pediatrics/ABSTRACTS/Chronic_Pediatric_Asthma.shtml. The conclusions:
“After 3 months of combining chiropractic SMT with optimal medical management for pediatric asthma, the children rated their quality of life substantially higher and their asthma severity substantially lower.” “ Further research is needed to assess which components of the chiropractic encounter are responsible for important improvements in patient-oriented outcomes so that they may be incorporated into the care of all asthmatic patients.”

Drop the words Chiropractic and ear infection in your search engine and watch what happens. You will be amazed to find the World Wide Web has woken up to the benefits of Chiropractic treatment for reoccurring ear infections. Ear pain is the number one reason for child visits to chiropractors. Many chiropractors believe that there is a strong link between the birthing process and recurrent ear infection, also known as otitis media. Become an empowered parent yourself go to http://www.healthychild.com/chiropractic/chiropractic-for-chronic-ear-infections and discover for yourself the benefits of Chiropractic for kids.
The ACA (American Chiropractic Association) http://www.acatoday.org/content_css.cfm?CID=69
Has this to say about ear infections.
“Ear problems can be excruciatingly painful, especially in children. With 10 million new cases every year, ear infections (otitis media) are the most common illness affecting babies and young children and the number one reason for visits to the pediatrician—accounting for more than 35 percent of all pediatric visits.
Almost half of all children will have at least one middle ear infection before they’re a year old, and two-thirds of them will have had at least one such infection by age 3. The symptoms can include ear pain, fever, and irritability. Otitis media can be either bacterial or viral in origin, and frequently results from another illness such as a cold. For many children, it can become a chronic problem, requiring treatment year after year, and putting the child at risk of permanent hearing damage and associated speech and developmental problems.”
Still not convinced; hear it from actual parents and Pedestrians in the following video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2FV916gylk. The activator used in the video for kids with ear infections is available at our clinic.

Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temporomandibular_joint_disorder describes it as;
Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD or TMD), or TMJ syndrome, is an umbrella term covering acute or chronic inflammation of the temporomandibular joint, which connects the mandible to the skull. The disorder and resultant dysfunction can result in significant pain and impairment. Because the disorder transcends the boundaries between several health-care disciplines — in particular, dentistry and neurology — there are a variety of treatment approaches. Treatment is Restoration of the occlusal surfaces of the teeth or a Splint.
Pain relief comes drug, drugs, and more drugs, which often does not respond well. Alternative approach is you guessed it off-label use drugs. Tricyclic antidepressant that have anti-muscarinic properties (e.g. Amitriptyline or the less sedative Nortriptyline) generally prove more effective.[ In TMJD the muscles are unbalanced. Biofeedback using EMG is successful in balancing these muscles.
Long-term approach: Manual adjustment of the bite by grinding the teeth (occlusal adjustment). This, too, is not a widely accepted practice and should be avoided, as it is irreversible. Nighttime biofeedback for para-functional habit modification. Mandibular repositioning splints which move the jaw, ligaments and muscles into a new position and myofunctional therapy. Reconstructive dentistry, Orthodontics, Arthrocentesis (joint irrigation) or surgical repositioning of jaws to correct congenital jaw malformations such as prognathism and retrognathia. Finally there is replacement of the jaw joint(s) or disc(s) with TMJ implants (This should be considered only as a treatment of last resort.)
Confused? You should be! While this can be a complicated subject and treatment may require one off the aforementioned approaches, jaws problems are joints and joints should be seen by joint expects first. When it comes to conservative joint treatment, avoidance of drugs and unnecessary surgeries you can’t beat Chiropractic. http://www.altmd.com/Articles/Chiropractic-for-TMJ I have treated dozens of TMD cases, the key is early diagnosis and conservative treatment with an activator. The use of an Activator for TMD is explained in the Chiropractic treatment video http://www.vancouverwashingtonchiro.com/category/dr-keith-castilloux starting at 7 minutes. “Deviations in the body’s center of gravity caused poor posture, which resulted in intestinal problems, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, osteoporosis, hip and foot deformities, poor health, decreased quality of life, and a shortened life span.”

Parents look at your kids – is their head forward, are their shoulder back and strong or rounded and also forward? There is a direct correlation between poor posture and putting the body in a state of disease.
“For every inch of Forward Head Posture, it can increase the weight of the head on the spine by an additional 10 pounds.” Kapandji, Physiology of Joints, Vol.
“Loss of cervical curve stretches the spinal cord 5 to 7 cm and produces pathological tension, putting the body in a state of disease.” Alf Breig, M.D.
Please take a moment and stand your child up and take a good look at their posture. If you don’t know what good posture should look like think of a champion ballroom dancer. Perfect posture is central to the sport. See if their ankles, hips, shoulders and ears are in line with each other. If not there are stretches and exercises they should be doing your local chiropractor could show you. The best news is it’s easier to fix youngster than adults. Remember a ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. Give the gift of health to your kids by getting them straight to a Chiropractor. A simple x-ray can confirm whether their neck has lost it’s curve or not. If it has only a chiropractor can improve it.
“Forward Head Posture LEADS to long term Muscle strain, disc herniations, arthritis and pinched nerves.” Mayo Clinic, Nov. 3rd, 2000

“The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patient in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease.” Thomas Edison
Profound thought and ahead of his time. Perhaps but we are all Chiropractors and I can prove it.
Eighty year old # 1 walks into the room with a bent back and a forward head.
Eighty year old # 2 walks into the room with a straight back and good over all posture.
Question(s) Which one do we innately know is healthy. Answer #2. In fact when #1 walked in we might have looked for a cane and asked if they needed any help. Why? Because we are all aware of the connection between good posture and good health.
”Posture is the key to life.” Mark Twain
What are you doing about your posture or the posture of your child?
